Cost per wear is the most quoted idea in wardrobe advice, and one of the least examined. The formula is trivially simple, the logic is genuinely sound, and it is used almost every day to justify purchases it should be preventing.

This guide covers the formula, a more honest version of it, and the five specific ways it goes wrong — because the failure modes are more useful to know than the arithmetic.

The Formula

Cost per wear = total cost ÷ number of times worn.

That's it. It's unit pricing applied to clothes: instead of judging a garment by what it cost, you judge it by what each wearing of it costs you.

"Total cost" should mean everything you actually spent — the price, plus VAT, plus delivery, plus any alterations. A £150 coat that needed £30 of sleeve shortening cost £180, and pretending otherwise flatters the number.

The point the table makes better than any argument: price and cost per wear are close to unrelated. The £250 coat costs £2.08 a wearing; the £25 top costs £5.00 — more than twice as much, for a fifth of the price tag. The £140 shoes land at 56p, cheaper per wearing than almost anything you could buy for £20. That inversion is the entire case for cost per wear, and it's a good one.

The Version That's Actually Useful

The basic formula ignores what a garment costs you after you buy it, and for some categories that's most of the cost. A more honest version:

(Price + alterations + cleaning + repairs − resale value) ÷ wears

Consider a dry-clean-only wool blazer at £200, worn 50 times, cleaned six times at £14. The naive figure is £4.00 a wear. Including cleaning, it's £5.68 — 42 per cent higher. Now compare it with a machine-washable blazer at £220 worn the same 50 times: naively the £200 one looks cheaper; in reality the £220 one is, at £4.40.

Resale runs the other way. A well-made coat bought for £250 and sold for £80 after three winters has an effective cost of £170, which drops the cost per wear from £2.08 to £1.42. This is the mechanism behind the claim that buying better is cheaper — it isn't only durability, it's that good pieces retain a resale value that bad ones don't.

Neither adjustment is complicated. Both change the answer enough to change decisions.

It's an Audit, Not a Permission Slip

Here is the failure that matters most, and it's a direction problem rather than a maths problem.

Cost per wear is a backward-looking measurement. You can only calculate it for something you already own, because the denominator is a fact about the past. The moment you apply it to something you haven't bought, the denominator becomes a guess — and it's a guess made by the part of you that already wants the thing.

"I'll wear it loads" is not data. It is the single most common lie in retail, and cost per wear laundered through it becomes a justification engine: any price divided by an imaginary number of wears produces a comfortable answer.

Used the other way round, it's genuinely powerful. Go through the things you already own, estimate the wears honestly, and the numbers will tell you something you didn't want to know — usually that the cheap impulse buys were the expensive ones. That exercise pairs naturally with a wardrobe declutter, because it gives you a non-emotional reason to let something go.

The Thirty Wears Test

The most useful forward-looking version of this idea isn't a calculation at all. It's the #30Wears campaign, started by the sustainable fashion campaigner Livia Firth of Eco-Age, which asks a single question before you buy anything: will I wear this at least thirty times?

It works because it's a yes-or-no question rather than an arithmetic one, and because thirty is a high enough bar to fail most impulse purchases honestly. You cannot fudge "will I wear this thirty times" the way you can fudge a division sum. Either you can picture thirty specific occasions or you can't.

Applied properly, it also kills the false comfort of a low price. A £15 top you'll wear four times fails the test. A £200 coat you'll wear a hundred times passes it easily. That's the correct ranking, and it's the one the price tag hides.

Five Ways Cost Per Wear Misleads

1. It rewards basics and punishes occasion wear — as though that were a verdict. Your black jeans will always win on cost per wear. That doesn't mean a wedding outfit was a mistake; some garments exist to be worn twice, and pretending otherwise leads to wearing the wrong thing to a wedding to protect a number.

2. It ignores the wardrobe around the garment. A fifth white shirt might get worn plenty and score well, while adding nothing you didn't have. Cost per wear measures the item in isolation, and clothes don't work in isolation. 3. It ignores the counterfactual. If you hadn't bought the new jumper, you would have worn one you already owned. The wears the new item accumulates were partly taken from something else, so the marginal value is lower than the raw number suggests.

4. It flatters things you wear because you have nothing else. High wear counts sometimes mean love, and sometimes mean a gap in your wardrobe you've been working around for two years. The number can't tell the difference; you can.

5. It's fragile to bad record-keeping. Almost nobody counts wears accurately from memory. Estimates skew high for things we like and low for things we regret, which is exactly the bias that would have to be absent for the metric to work.

How to Actually Track It

Three levels, and honestly the first is enough for most people.

Estimate in blocks. Once a season, look at what you actually reached for. "Most weeks" is roughly 40 wears a year; "a few times a month" is about 25; "a handful of times" is 5. Precision beyond that changes nothing about the decision.

Log the big items only. Coats, boots, suits, anything over about £100. These are where the numbers are large enough to matter and few enough to track without it becoming a chore.

Use an app that tracks wears. A number on its own isn't a decision. Three things worth doing with it:

Set a threshold before you shop, not after. Decide what a wear is worth to you in a given category — say £2 for everyday clothes and £10 for occasion wear — and then ask what wear count the price implies. A £120 dress at a £10 threshold needs twelve wearings. Can you name twelve occasions? If not, it's the wrong dress or the wrong price.

Buy the boring thing better. Cost per wear consistently favours the pieces you wear constantly and consistently punishes novelty. The practical implication is unglamorous: spend more on coats, shoes, trousers and knitwear, and less on the thing that caught your eye.
